This is truly one of the most fascinating silk nightgowns that we’ve ever seen from the 1930s! This Yolande-labeled beauty is one of Richard's most-treasured silk lingerie pieces, and it occupies a special place in the New Jersey ‘HQ’ of Silver Screen Loungerie.Richard purchased this gown at a recent vintage clothing show in New York City. The gown shows no indication of previous wear, so we believe the original owner took very considerate care of it. There are no flaws that we could find….. not even a solitary pinhole or “age” spot!
As in all slips and nightgowns made by Yolande, this one is “Hand Made”. The long side seams and the diagonal godet seams (near the hem) are all hand-finished with French seams. Even the bodice seams are finished with an overcasting stitch by hand.
The silk charmeuse fabric is the most exotic material that could ever touch your skin! Nowhere in today’s world will you find the kind of silk that Yolande used in their most-beautiful slips and nightgowns! The cut (style) of this gown is something that we’ve never seen before. The front and back bodice sections are “surplice-wrapped” at the sides, so the arm openings (not “holes”) are deep to the waistline. The centre-front and centre-back are also surplice-wrapped, so accurate measurements were hard to obtain. The gown is tagged as a (size) “36”, but it measures out to a very-comfortable “38”. (Around the fullest part of the chest/bust.)
